 Shaniwar Wada

Location: Shaniwar Peth, Pune, Maharashtra

Shaniwar Wada is a historical site in Pune city, and it is essentially famous for its haunting story rather than its history. Shaniwar Wada was the masthead of the Peshwas and in 1773 Narayan Rao became the 5th Peshwa of the empire when he was just 16 years old. But his uncle Raghunathrao and aunt Anandibai wanted to take the throne for themselves. Hence, they ordered their guards to kill him and threw his body into the river. Locals say that they can hear cries of help from Narayan Rao to this date from inside the fort.

DOW Hills

Location: Kurseong, West Bengal

DOW Hills is considered to be one of the most haunted hill stations in India. There is a road that stretches from Dow Hills to the Forest Office that is considered to be the death road. Locals have witnessed a headless boy walking the road and suddenly vanishing into the woods. Another famous haunt is the Victoria Boys’ School that looks beautiful by day, and haunting by night. The staff has heard disembodied footsteps in their floors when the schools were closed during vacations.

Kuldhara

Location: Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Kuldhara is an abandoned village in Rajasthan which is famous for its eerie history. The village used to be a bountiful place where the Paliwal Brahmins resided. A corrupt official named Salim Singh started levying hefty taxes on the villagers. Everything went smoothly until he noticed the daughter of Kuldhara’s village head. The girl refused his advances and Salim Singh started levying additional taxes on the villagers. Then one evening all the village chiefs decided to desert the village and that happened overnight. But before leaving they cursed the village that no one would ever be able to inhabit it again. To this day it lies deserted and those who tried to live met with an uncertain fate.

Delhi Cantonment

Location: Delhi

This is perhaps one of the haunted locations in the capital city that is the Delhi Cantonment. The area is very spick and span through the day, but as night falls, it attracts something that is not human. The place is essentially a magnet for paranormal activities and it is quite odd. Locals and motorists have witnessed an other-worldly apparition of a woman dressed in a white saree on the road. History states that sometimes a woman had engulfed herself in flames and took her life. It is said that she follows motorists passing by that road at breakneck speeds as well.

Bhangarh Fort

Location: Alwar, Bhangarh, Rajasthan

Perhaps one of the most haunted places in the India, everyone mentions Bhangarh Fort as being one such place. The fort looks formidable during the day but at night it can spook out anybody looking to venture out there. The story is that a magician had incurred wrath upon this village by cursing this place as he was not able to meet the love of his life who was the erstwhile Princess in the fort. Cries of the villagers can still be heard at the dead of the night.

Dumas Beach

Location: Surat, Gujarat

Dumas Beach is also one of the haunted spots in Gujarat. Historical facts state that Dumas Beach was a burial ground before and is, therefore, home to many spirits of the other world. The black sand by which it is famous for is essentially said to be ashes of the dead. Locals have witnessed strange activities during the night which included spirits and apparitions moving around the beach which is definitely spooky.

D’Souza Chawl

Location: Mahim, Mumbai, Maharashtra

It looks like a regular çhawl during the day, but it turns out to be one of the nightmarish locations during the night. D’Souza Chawl is one such haunt that also has a tragic history behind it. Apparently, a woman fell to her death from the well, slipped and then fell inside it. She was given the proper burial and the well was also filled up so that no one would use it. But during the night, people claim to see the spirit of that woman on the same spot as the well was once there.

Ramoji Film City

Location: Hyderabad

Ramoji Film City is famous for being the shooting location of many blockbusters and prominent films in Bollywood. But it is also famous for one thing, being one of the haunted places in Hyderabad. It is known that this grand structure was erected on an erstwhile war zone of the Nizams. The souls of the deceased soldiers still haunt some of the places in this Film City. In another incident, a staff boy had claimed that he was pushed by an invisible force from behind.

Agrasen Ki Baoli

Location: Hailey Road, New Delhi

Agrasen Ki Baoli is a historical monument listed by the Archaeological Survey of India, and it is home to a lot of chilling stories as well. This monument used to be a stepwell and it was visited by many tourists from around the world. But as you go deeper into the stepwell, particularly after 108 steps, the air around you starts getting heavier. Many people were compelled to jump inside the well because of the corporeal whisperings from the spirits residing over there.
