India is endowed with beautiful and majestic sceneries that have turned out well for tourism here. With more and more tourism concentrating on the popular hill stations in India, there are still lesser known hill stations, that are untouched by the pressures of commercialization. The experience of hill hamlets unaffected by haphazard tourism is an awesome one. Lesser hassles and more explorations are few benefits of choosing to go to a place that has been usually untouched but yet is ethereal. They remind you of the past world gone by; dak bungalows of Uttarakhand and the blue trails of Nilgiris.

From all the four cardinal directions, listed here are some of the best, pristine, and fairly unknown hill stations in India that you must check out before they turn mainstream:

In North India

Kausani, Uttarakhand

Near Kathgodam lies a beautiful hilly hamlet Kausani, little explored, but a must-go to view majestic Himalayan peaks Trishul, Nanda Devi and Panchchuli. Also known as ‘Switzerland of India’, Kausani has Baijnath Temple, Rudradhari Falls & Caves and Anasakti Ashram amongst other tourist attractions.

Kanatal, Uttarakhand

Kanatal is a resplendent scene from a movie- with plenty of apple orchards, pine forests and wild flowers. There are number of temples around the Kanatal, located around 40 kilometers from Mussoorie. It is quiet getaway from city chaos and heat.

Chaukori, Uttarakhand

Captivating sights of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Panchauli can be witnessed here at sunrise. Other attractions are Kapileshwar Mahadev, Ulka Devi Temple and Jayanti Temple Dhwaj. Chaukori, near Kathgodam, offers plenty of untouched surroundings to travelers.

Khati, Uttarakhand

Located on the Pindari glacier trek route, Khati is the last village and can be reached by trekking. Unexplored natural beauty nestled in Himalayas, this quite little village near Kathgodam is surrounded by picturesque rhododendrons and oak forests.

In South India

Yercaud, Tamil Nadu

Yercaud is a perfect getaway for travelers looking for just some simple quiet time. It has a bit of everything- trekking, boating, nature walks. Places of interest include Servarayan temple, which is the highest point, and various natural rock formations.

Coonoor, Tamil Nadu

Quite famous for its Nilgiri Tea Estates, Coonoor is a great place for trekking Nilgiri hills. Other attractions are Law’s falls. Take a trek to Droog from the falls to visit ruins of an ancient fort.

Ponmudi, Kerala

Ponmudi has the best picture-perfect sunrise than anywhere else. The place has plenty of tea gardens. Other attractions are river Kallar, a deer park, a wildlife sanctuary and a biological park which makes it a great place for vacationing with kids.

Shimoga, Karnataka

The well-known jog falls, with most breathtaking sight, lie in Shimoga. It has many waterfalls, with jog falls being of gigantic magnitude. Then there is Kodachari peak with rich biodiversity. Agumbe is known to be the most secluded hill station in the Western Ghats, but is heavenly due to its forest and fog cover.

In West India

Chikhaldara, Maharashtra

A quaint scenic hill station neatly hidden away in Satpura ranges, Chikhaldara entices travelers looking for unexplored virgin beauty. It is about 100 kilometers from Amravati. Attractions like Kitchakdari and Shakkar lakes are very popular. There is a tiger sanctuary, a wildlife museum, and Gawilghur Fort.

In North-East India

Haflong, Assam

Haflong is must-go for the blue hills, a tourist attraction, which have almost 200 thousand varieties of flowers. The Haflong Lake has to be the most picturesque spot here.

In East India

Pelling, Sikkim

A small hill town in the Kanchenjunga Range, Pelling has many monasteries, some of which are several centuries old. Local attractions include Pemayangste monastery, 16th century Sanga Choling monastery, Changey and Khangchendzonga waterfalls, and Khecheopalri Lake.
